Manchester took the opportunity to rebuild and reshape this part of the city centre after the IRA bomb attack in 1996. Marks and Spenser, part of the Arndale Centre and the bridge connecting them were destroyed or badly damaged in the attack, bringing about a great redevelopment program to rebuild and regenerate this part of the city centre. Marks and Spencer were totally rebuilt on its original site making it the largest branch outside of Oxford Street London. However, to enable this Safeway supermarket had to be demolished and the two Medieval pubs had to be moved brick by brick from the original Shambles square to form the new Shambles incorporating it with the new Exchange square development an open space edged by an exciting new extravagant exclusive shopping area
The Exchange square also incorporates New Cathedral street and between them they bring you in addition to the rebuilt Marks and Spencer two household names in exclusive department stores, being Harvey Nichols and Selfridges. Both of these luxury stores stock an assortment of top quality labels to satisfy the needs of any sophisticated lady such as a classy elite escort in Manchester. Other shops qualifying for the luxury bracket are the likes of Louis Vuitton and Burberry.
Take a break from the shopping for a meal or refreshments at one of the two relocated historic wood timbered pubs in the new Shamble square which are next to an area that can be used for performances or exhibitions. The walkways in the area have been specially tiered so it can be utilised as audience seating as well as two sculptures and a water feature helping to turn the square into a focal point. A place where people can meet up.
